CARDIAC MONITORING

Starting your heart monitoring journey

Getting you ready, step by step

What is happening in your heart?

Your heart usually beats in a steady, regular rhythm. This rhythm is controlled by electrical signals that move through your heart in a specific pattern.

Sometimes, these signals become irregular – causing your heart to beat too fast, too slow, or unevenly.

This is known as an arrhythmia.

What is a cardiac monitor?

Cardiac monitors are medical devices that record your heart rhythm over time. They provide your doctor with important information to detect abnormal rhythms (also referred to as arrhythmias) and understand your symptoms, which will help decide the next steps in your treatment journey.

There are two main types of heart monitors your doctor may recommend.

Insertable Cardiac Monitors (ICM)

A small paper-clip sized device, which is inserted under your skin. The ICM automatically tracks irregular heart rhythms, either when they occur outside of a preset range or when activated by you.

Remote Cardiac Monitors

A small, waterproof device worn on your chest. This monitor records every heartbeat continuously over several days or weeks while you go about your normal routine.

Why is heart monitoring important?

If you have been diagnosed with an arryhthmia, monitoring helps the care team understand what’s happening—whether symptoms are present or not.

Below are some of the symptoms associated with an arrhythmia which may result in cardiac monitoring being recommended to you by a healthcare professional:

These symptoms can be caused by an undetected arrhythmia. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, seek the help of a healthcare professional
